The Disaster Response Team needs our help!

We need to collect cleaning kitshygiene kits, and other muck out supplies (flat-bladed shovels, pump sprayers, box fans, extension cords).

Please let the office know (by phone at 850-243-7595 or by email at layleadership@maryestherumc.org) if you are willing and able to support an Early Response Team (ERT). It is anticipated that by this weekend, calls will start coming in for these teams to support clean-up efforts.

All kits and muck out supplies need to make be collected ASAP to help our fellow Alabama-West Florida Conference members.

Through these efforts we can show HOPE to survivors who really need help in this time of a natural disaster.

October 2018 Sermon Series: The Upside-Down Kingdom https://www.maryestherumc.org/2018/october-2018-sermon-series-the-upside-down-kingdom/ Fri, 28 Sep 2018 05:20:43 +0000 https://www.maryestherumc.org/?p=5424 Read More]]> The Upside-Down Kingdom

Hello, beautiful people!

So much about Christian faith is counter-cultural – even counter-intuitive. No doubt, the Jesus way is a WEIRD way, especially when you hold it close to the standard habits and patterns of both his day and ours.

If you were a comic book reader in the 60s and 70s, you might remember Bizarro World. Bizarro World was an alternate reality in Superman comics. Everything in that world was the exact opposite of what we would expect on earth. Up is down, left is right, in is out. The planet’s name is Htrae (“Earth” spelled backwards) and is shaped like a perfect cube! Bizarre, indeed!

Our October worship series may leave us with a similar feeling of disorientation as we listen to the bizarre teachings of Jesus. This 2,000-year-old rabbi is still challenging our best thinking and all that seems like “common sense” today. But we don’t really have a choice! THIS is the Savior we have. May we be open to having our perspectives adjusted, our minds opened, and our hearts humbled before God and neighbor.

Here are the themes for each week:

October 7

Where the Children Are Blessed

Mark 10:2-16

October 14

Where the Last Are First

Mark 10:17-31

October 21

Where the Least Are Greatest

Mark 10:35-45

October 28

Where the Blind Can See

Mark 10:46-52

See you Sunday!
Sam

P.S. Don’t forget! On Sunday, October 7, 2018, at 3:00 p.m., Bishop David Graves will host a town hall meeting at Navarre UMC. The district town hall meetings are part of an on-going conversation concerning The Commission on A Way Forward and the called General Conference scheduled, February 2019. The purpose of these gatherings is to bring clarity and answer questions around the three proposed plans coming from The Commission on A Way Forward to the 2019 General Conference. All interested United Methodists, both lay and clergy, are invited to attend!

We plan to take the bus from our parking lot if there is interest in attending.
